API 5L Grade X52 pipes have superior mechanical strength with a minimum yield strength of about 360 MPA. These grade pipes are superior to API 5L Grade B, API 5L Grade X42 and API 5L Grade X46 pipe concerning chemical and mechanical properties. Api 5l X52 Line Pipe are the most widely used pipes in the industry as they have high resistance to corrosion making them suited for sour services.
API 5L Grade X52 pipes production special attention is given to toughness and Impact test especially for sour services and high pressure and temperature services. Sulphur stress corrosion is a common occurrence in sour wells. Usually the surface of the API 5l X52 schedule 40 Pipe is coated with anti-corrosion oil, varnish, black oil paint, etc. The layer formed thus creates an additional layer of corrosion resistance on the pipes.
This grade is also non-flammable which allows it to be used in sensitive projects like power generation via nuclear, thermal, geo thermal and hydro methods. Other applications for these pipes include flood control, textile industry, sugar industry, construction of buildings. It is used to convey gas, steam and fluids. There are two differentiation levels for these pipes PSL-1 and PSL-2. PSL-1 pipes don’t require impact and non-destructive testing.
API 5L pipes are also referred to as ISO 3183 pipes.
